Winter Activities for Kids in Springfield
When the rain settles in and the days get colder, it can be tough to keep kids moving, engaged, and happily worn out. Check out the guide below for an insider guide to upcoming programs that will help make winter easier and a lot more fun.
Kids Five and Under
Sometimes finding activities for kids under five can feel like a full-time job. Strap on those little sneakers, pack your snacks, and get ready for some fun!
- My First Classes: Families have been asking for more My First classes in the early evening, and now My First Tumbling will be offered Thursday evenings in March and May. Grown-ups can participate alongside their children. This season, there are 12 My First classes, each with a different theme and focus!
- Preschool: Willamalane’s Tiny Ducks Preschool has both full- and part-time options for ages 3-5, blending early STEM and literacy, creative play, and social-emotional learning to help your child prepare for kindergarten.
- Swim lessons: Help your child feel confident and capable in the water with lessons that build strong swimming and water safety skills.
Elementary School
Kids ages 6-11 in elementary school have lots of activities to choose from at Willamalane. If your kid loves Young Chefs or has a creative bug that needs nourishing, try out the new Young Artists programs. Plus, popular favorites are back, including a K-Pop No School Day, after-school sports, kids' cooking programs, and the always-popular Kids Night Out events!
- No School Days: Next time you hear, “gonna be, gonna be golden,” take that as your cue to sign up for a K-Pop No-School Day on Jan. 30. Your student will spend the day doing fun, themed activities. There’s another no school day on March 20, too!
- NEW! Young Artists: Each session dives deep into a different theme. Each month will feature a focus area of drawing, painting, anime, or mixed-media creations.
- Young Chefs: Kids learn the basics of cooking with a real chef! Coming up this winter and spring: donuts, decorations, side dishes, and getting ready for summer BBQ season.
- After-School All-Stars: This winter, basketball clinics and leagues will take place at Springfield elementary schools right after school. Then, in the spring, track and field kicks off. Fourth- and fifth-graders get to participate in games and meets, while younger kids focus on skill development through fun clinics.
Middle School
Activities for tweens can be hard to come by! This year, Willamalane is offering expanded programs through the popular Two50 Youth Center at Bob Keefer Center. On no-school days and during spring break, middle school students can spend their days at Two50 playing games, participating in activities, and having fun. No School Days and spring break camps are great ways to try out the program before signing up for Willamalane’s Camp Venture, a day summer camp just for middle schoolers!
- NEW! Spring break camp: This all-day camp features outdoor activities, creative challenges, and team-building games that will keep your teenager busy during the break.
- NEW! No School Day: On April 17, tweens can spend the day on a guided hike and creating nature-themed crafts.
- Middle School Sports: Leagues take place at Agnes Stewart, Hamlin, Thurston, and Briggs middle schools. They will compete against other schools in basketball, soccer, or track and field.
