After a full year of adapting to COVID-19, Willamalane and Lane Council of Governments and Senior & Disability Services (LCOG) mark a milestone: more than 25,000 meals delivered in one year of its drive-through senior meal service. Each day, patrons drive through and are greeted by Willamalane and LCOG staff as they pick up their meal.

The program began after the indoor service was paused due to COVID-19 restrictions and closures. The one-year milestone of the adapted drive-through senior meal service will be Tuesday, March 16. This will be a normal meal service, with a thank you to community members and LCOG.

“This year has been so tough on all of us, especially our most vulnerable patrons, but this milestone feels celebratory. It is one year later, and we still have this strong sense of community at Willamalane Adult Activity Center,” said Tracy Kribs, Special Events and Operations Program Manager.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Willamalane has seen a surge in demand for this senior meal program. Before the crisis, the Café 60 senior meals program served 60-70 meals per day. Now, the drive-through program serves more than 100 meals each day. Over the last year, the program has served 25,456 meals.

The Café 60  senior meals program runs at Willamalane Adult Activity Center every weekday, in partnership with LCOG. Lunch is a suggested cash donation of $3.

To keep community connection alive and essential services delivered, Willamalane expanded services by adapting existing programs and creating new ones. A new book and puzzle exchange program helped to prevent isolation as people stayed home. The Adult Activity Center’s Gift Shop went virtual, continuing to give local artisans a place to sell handcrafted goods. FIDO Pet Food Bank distribution, foot care services, Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA), Low Income Energy Assistance (LIHEAP), and pro bono senior law services have also continued in an adapted capacity.

In addition to Café 60 Senior Meals, Willamalane Adult Activity Center hosts monthly Community Breakfast open to all ages. The next breakfast is March 19. For dates and more information on all senior services, visit willamalane.org/services or call 541-736-4444.
