Community Spotlight: Annette Anderson

Photo of a smiling woman with gray hair, a blue shirt, and a necklace. Her name is Annette Anderson.Annette Anderson spends much of her time at home, tending the lawn and fruit trees on the grounds of her large Springfield estate.

But once a week, she comes into the Adult Activity Center to put in a volunteer shift at the welcome desk.

“My friend volunteers at the welcome desk, so we get to see each other more often,” Annette said. “We came in and decided to volunteer together, and it’s been great.”

She enjoys volunteering because she likes getting to know the Adult Activity Center visitors. “I get to meet fun and interesting people,” she said. “It’s a nice place to be.” Annette has taken part in the Adult Activity Center programs herself, having taken art and German language classes.

“There are always festivals going on around here, in the park and inside the center,” Annette said. “I remember canoeing out on the river at a festival once. And then there’s the Holiday Marketplace in December where everything in the gift shop is featured
out in the lobby.”

Annette says the highlight of the volunteer experience for her is seeing the connections that people make at the Adult Activity Center.

“For some people, this place is their lifeline,” she said. “There are things like the Friendship Circle and the meals they have in the dining room. People can get out of the house, see their friends, and get a coffee together.”
