Language Classes

American Sign Langauge: Ages 13+. Through a series of games, practice drills, and continuous review, students will learn American Sign Language basics. With an emphasis on parameters and handshapes, approximately 100 basic signs will be firmly integrated into conversations. This is a good exploration of sign language and will help in deciding if learning sign language is something you would like to do.

Legal Advice, Advance Directives: Ages 18+. Attorney Bill Atwood provides legal information and advice in monthly group sessions. Advance directives review the Oregon Advance Directive, which appoints a health care representative and ensures that patients' wishes regarding medical treatment are carried out, should they be unable to communicate them to a doctor.

Understand your devices

Learn to Use Features on Your Android Device: Ages 50+.  All these Android features, where do I begin? Do not let all the new features bog you down. This class will teach you how to set up and use your new Android device. You will learn about the navigation button functionalities and gestures, and multiple home screens. You will also learn how to use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Flight mode options. Please bring your Android device (phone, tablet) to class.

Using Zoom on your Android or Mac Device: Ages 50+.  Zoom is an online service used for teleconferencing, telecommuting, distance education, and social relations. In this three-part series, you will learn the basics of how to access and set up the program to joining and hosting your own meetings. Please bring your own device to class.

What Technology to Buy: Ages 50+.  With so many options, it is hard to know what kind of technology to invest in. This class will cover a wide variety of current technologies including smart speakers, smartphones, and other smart things, electronic readers, video game systems, devices and toys, and traditional toys that are still valuable in teaching technology to kids and young adults.

Online Commerce and Telemedicine Tools: Ages 50+.  Given the current pandemic, many people are turning to online tools to cover basic needs. This class will explain how to use or work for online shopping businesses. Do you want to get your groceries delivered to you? Do you want to deliver groceries for others? We will discuss a few of the major platforms that provide these services.

Arduino Nano Thermometer Project: Ages 50+.  Arduino boards are simple micro-controllers that provide basic programming capabilities using the python programming language to control their operation. This class will describe the basic capacities of the Arduino Nano board and the tools needed to program them. The example project will be a simple thermometer tool, but you will learn all the basic tools needed to take on larger projects on your own.

Solar Power for Your Home and Mobile: Ages 50+.  Ever wanted to power your home with sunshine? Want to not pay for the utility power? Want to get completely off the grid? In this class, we will go over solar power systems from small kits that can power a small motor or lights at night to whole household power systems that can provide power during an outage. We address some of the myths and the limitations of solar power. We'll explain solar panels, charge controllers, batteries, and inverters and we'll demonstrate a simple system.
